Do I Need to Sign a Contract for Fiber Internet?

Contract terms and conditions

This is one of the most common concerns homeowners have before signing up. The good news: most major fiber providers now offer month-to-month options, though contract plans sometimes come with promotional pricing benefits.

Month-to-Month vs. Contract Plans

Month-to-month plans have no early termination fee. You can cancel any time with 30 days notice. Contract plans (12–24 months) sometimes offer a lower monthly rate or free equipment, but come with cancellation penalties — typically a flat fee or prorated remaining balance.

What 'No Contract' Really Means

'No contract' means no early termination fee — but the provider can still change your rate with proper notice. It does not mean your price is locked forever. Read the service agreement carefully regardless of contract term.

When a Contract Makes Sense

If you're staying in your home for 2+ years and the contract offers a lower rate or free equipment, it can make financial sense. Calculate the total cost over the term versus the month-to-month option before deciding.

Moving and Contracts

Most fiber providers will waive early termination fees if you move to an area where they don't provide service. Confirm this policy before signing any contract, especially if you rent or may relocate.

What to Get in Writing

Whatever you agree to at the door, ensure you receive an email confirmation within 24 hours with: your plan details, monthly cost, contract term, and installation date. If you don't receive it, call the carrier directly to confirm your order.
