How Long Does Fiber Internet Installation Take?

Setup timeline and process

Before committing to a switch, most people want to know: how disruptive is the installation? The answer depends on whether fiber infrastructure is already at your property and what type of installation is needed.

Types of Fiber Installation

Aerial installation: fiber drops from a utility pole to your home — typically faster, 2–3 hours. Underground installation: fiber is run through conduit under your yard — can take a full day or require a separate burial crew visit after the initial hookup.

What Happens During the Visit

The technician will locate the fiber termination point at your home, run a cable to an interior mounting location (usually a utility closet or exterior wall), install an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), connect your router or gateway, and test speeds before leaving.

Do I Need to Be Home?

Yes. At least an adult (18+) must be present for the full installation. The tech needs access to your home for interior work and may need to drill a small hole for the cable entry point if one doesn't exist.

Scheduling Timeline

After signing up, installation is typically scheduled 3–14 days out depending on technician availability in your area. Door-to-door reps can often schedule your appointment on the spot and give you a specific window.

What to Do Before the Technician Arrives

Clear access to your utility closet or modem location. Know where you want the ONT/gateway placed. Have your account number ready. Plan to be home for the full appointment window — most providers give a 2–4 hour window, though actual installations often run shorter.
