What's included in the package
Before you switch to fiber, it helps to know what will show up at your house on installation day and what you'll be responsible for providing yourself.
Every fiber installation includes an ONT — a small box mounted on an exterior wall or in a utility closet that converts the fiber signal into an Ethernet signal your devices can use. This is always provided and installed by the carrier's technician. You do not own this device.
Most providers offer an all-in-one gateway that combines the modem and Wi-Fi router functions. This is typically included (rented for $10–$15/month) or can be purchased for $150–$300. Some providers include it free for the first 12 months on certain plans.
After the ONT is installed, you can connect your own Wi-Fi router to the ONT's Ethernet port. This bypasses the provider's router rental fee. For best performance, use a Wi-Fi 6 router if you have a gigabit plan — older routers may not handle the speeds efficiently.
A single router may not cover large homes. If you have a 2,500+ sq ft home, consider a mesh Wi-Fi system (Eero, Google Nest, TP-Link Deco) that places multiple nodes throughout your home for consistent coverage. These work with fiber without any special configuration.
Technicians install the ONT and typically run one Ethernet cable to a central location. They do NOT run internal network wiring, install additional outlets, or configure smart home devices. They will confirm you have internet connectivity before leaving.
