Installation requirements
One of the biggest misconceptions about fiber is that your home needs to be pre-wired for it. It doesn't. Fiber installation adapts to your existing home infrastructure.
You don't need fiber cables running through your walls. The technician brings fiber cable from the street or utility pole to your home's exterior, terminates it at the ONT box, and then connects the ONT to your home's standard Ethernet or coax infrastructure.
The fiber cable runs from the street connection to the outside of your home, where a small weatherproof conduit or drilled entry point lets it enter the structure. The tech will find the most practical entry point — often near a utility closet, garage wall, or existing cable entry.
If your home has coaxial cable (TV cable) running through the walls, some providers can use MoCA adapters to extend Ethernet connectivity through those existing coax runs to reach rooms far from the ONT. This avoids needing to run new Ethernet cables.
Older homes (pre-1990s) can still get fiber. The installation process is slightly more involved — finding practical entry points, navigating older wall construction — but it's done every day. Technicians are trained for challenging installs.
In rare cases, getting fiber to your specific home may require trenching (for buried lines) or a pole-to-home aerial drop. These are handled by the provider's installation crew and shouldn't cost you extra, though they may require a separate appointment for the burial portion.
