Signing up for fiber internet involves more paperwork than you might expect. Understanding what you're agreeing to before you sign protects you as a consumer.
Every fiber internet signup involves a service agreement — either paper or electronic — that outlines your plan details, monthly cost, term length, termination terms, and the carrier's service policies. Read this document, specifically the sections on pricing changes, termination fees, and dispute resolution.
Most fiber signups are now completed digitally on a tablet or phone. The rep enters your information and shows you a digital document to sign. You should receive an email copy immediately — if you don't receive this within 24 hours, call to request it.
Many providers run a soft or hard credit check before activating service. You'll typically need to authorize this. A soft check doesn't affect your credit score; a hard check may lower it by 1–5 points temporarily. Ask the rep which type they use.
You'll sign a document authorizing the technician to access your property and home for installation purposes. This includes permission to drill if necessary and mount equipment on your exterior wall.
Before signing: confirm the monthly price matches what was quoted; check the term length (month-to-month vs. 12/24 months); locate the early termination fee amount; note the installation date and 4-hour window; and confirm the technician contact number. If anything doesn't match what you were told, don't sign until it's corrected.
