Company reliability and history
It's reasonable to want to know you're signing up with a company that will be around to service your account. Here's how to evaluate any fiber provider's stability.
AT&T Fiber, Frontier, Brightspeed, and Windstream have been operating as national providers for decades. Their fiber operations may be relatively new (5–10 years), but the parent companies have long operating histories, extensive regulatory oversight, and billions in infrastructure investment.
Smaller regional fiber providers can also be excellent — in fact, they often deliver superior service because fiber is their entire business, not a secondary offering. Research them with BBB, state public utility commission records, and community forums like Reddit or Nextdoor.
Check Better Business Bureau ratings, Google and Yelp reviews (look for patterns, not outliers), state PUC complaint records, and community groups in your area. The most revealing feedback comes from people who've actually had service for 12+ months.
Ask the rep how long the carrier has been operating in your specific area, what their customer support hours are, and what the process is if service goes down. A rep confident in their carrier's quality will answer these without hesitation.
Some excellent fiber providers are newer entrants building community-owned or venture-backed networks. Check whether they've completed their initial buildout, how many subscribers they've activated, and whether local government bodies are involved — these are all positive stability signals.
