Process difficulty and convenience
Switching any service comes with some friction. Here's what the fiber transition actually involves and how to minimize the disruption.
Sign up (30 minutes with a rep or online), schedule installation (3–14 days out), have an adult home for the installation window (2–4 hours), set up your equipment, and cancel your old service. That's the complete process.
Don't cancel your current internet before your fiber installation is confirmed complete. Schedule your old cancellation for the day after your fiber installation is confirmed working. Most cable providers can end service effective within 24–48 hours.
The fiber tech does all the heavy lifting: runs the cable, installs the ONT, sets up the gateway. You don't need any technical knowledge. Just be home, show them where you'd like the equipment placed, and confirm connectivity before they leave.
When you switch providers, your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) will change unless you configure your new router to match the old one. Smart home devices connected to Wi-Fi will need to be reconnected. This is the most time-consuming part — plan 30–60 minutes after installation to reconnect devices.
If you're still under contract with your current cable provider, you'll face an ETF. Factor this into your switching math — if it's $150 to exit and you're saving $20/month with fiber, it takes 7.5 months to break even. That's still a reasonable calculation for a multi-year switch.
