Avoiding scams
Legitimate fiber sales reps knock on doors every day. So do scammers pretending to be fiber reps. Here's how to tell the difference.
A legitimate rep will: wear a branded uniform or carry an official ID badge with their name and the company they represent; use a company-issued tablet or phone to access your address and pull up plans; give you a business card with verifiable contact information; and never pressure you to sign or pay immediately at the door.
A legitimate fiber rep will ask for your name, address (to check availability), and email (for order confirmation). They will NOT ask for your social security number, credit card number, bank routing number, or payment at the door. Service starts after installation — not before.
Call the carrier directly using the number on their official website (not a number the rep gives you) and ask if the rep is authorized. Most carriers have a rep lookup or dealer authorization you can confirm. You can also ask the rep to show you their dealer ID and the carrier's official promotional materials.
Be suspicious if a rep: cannot show any ID or badge; pressures you to decide immediately; requests payment or financial information upfront; gives you a price significantly lower than what's on the carrier's website without a clear explanation; or uses a personal Gmail or Yahoo email address for correspondence.
If something feels off, don't engage. Tell them you'll look up the offer online and call to confirm. Any legitimate rep will be completely comfortable with this — they're confident the offer will check out. If a rep becomes aggressive when you say this, that itself is a red flag.
