Package deals and savings
Bundling services used to be the clear winner for cost savings. In today's streaming era, the math is more nuanced.
AT&T still offers TV bundles (AT&T TV / DirecTV Stream) with their fiber service. Frontier offers select TV packages in some markets. However, many pure-play fiber providers — Brightspeed, Ting, Ziply — offer internet only and don't bundle TV.
AT&T Fiber + TV + Phone bundled might run $150–$200/month compared to $70 for fiber alone. The bundle adds ~$80–$130/month for TV and phone. Compare this to: Netflix ($15) + Hulu ($8) + Disney+ ($8) + a streaming TV service ($40–$70) = $71–$101/month total for far more content flexibility.
If you watch live local news and sports and don't want to deal with multiple service providers, a traditional TV bundle might still make sense. Senior households that use the landline phone service heavily also tend to find bundle value. But for most under-60 households, à la carte streaming wins.
Landline phone is the easiest bundle to skip. VOIP apps (Google Voice, WhatsApp) provide free calling over your fiber internet connection. If your carrier offers a 'free' phone line with a bundle, it may be included in the cost — but if it requires extra payment, it's rarely worth it.
If you want a bundle, don't accept the first price. Call the retention or sales line and ask if any promotional bundle pricing is available. Bundle discounts of $20–$30/month on top of individual promotional pricing are sometimes available at the start of service.
